Initially, gratitude can feel unnatural, and a bit unsettling. We might think: how can we be grateful when reality falls so short from our expectations? We might wonder: what if gratefulness is merely a mental sugar pill? A trick, hindering our progress and making us complacent. These doubts are natural, but often, they are the result of fear clouding our vision. Despite our inner knowing that gratitude is good for us, we are often afraid of it. Afraid that it will leave us vulnerable to be taken advantage of. Afraid it will somehow increase the injustices and real pains we may experience in life. But gratitude isn’t a turning away from the reality of our difficulties, it’s a turning towards the good that is always present. When we develop the skill to recognize the good, we are one step closer to realizing more of it.
THIS WEEK: What area of your life might need a little care and attention? Is it a key relationship? Is it your mental health? Something else? Consider how gratitude may be a perfect way to cultivate growth in this area.
