On Getting Unstuck

The reason most of us stay stuck isn’t because we like staying stuck. It’s because we don’t know what’s holding us in place. Oftentimes, we imagine that the reason we can’t get unstuck is because we don’t know how, like a boot stuck in the mud that we can’t figure out how to pull out. But this framing is part of the problem. We ask how to get unstuck before we first determine why we are stuck to begin with. As we dig deep and reflect, we realize that it’s often not the mud that is holding our foot in place - it’s something else less apparent. Many addictions, bad habits, and broken relationship cycles aren’t actually about what they appear to be about. Their roots are deeper. The first step to freedom is discovering the roots of what is keeping you stuck. That’s where reflection comes in.

THIS WEEK: Virtually everyone is addicted to something. It need not be a legal or illegal substance. It could be approval, praise, social media, security, entertainment, peak experiences (or 1000 other things). What were you addicted to in 2023? Spend some time reflecting on your primary addiction and what might be the deeper desire underneath it.

All the best,
